Development Wasteland 3 was announced by inXile Entertainment in September 2016. Wasteland 3 is being produced using the Unity game engine. The expansion team is composed of a few people who operated on Torment: Tides of Numenera (2017). As with Wasteland 2, inXile chose to crowdfund the development of the game. Unlike their previous Kickstarter projects, inXile preferred to use investment crowdfunding assistance. The crowdfunding crusade launched in October 2016, and conclude a month later with over $3 million allocated.
The game was programmed to begin on Linux, macOS, PlayStation 4, Windows and Xbox One in Q4 2019. After Xbox Game Studios obtained the corporation, inXile hired more staff for the game's development and postponed its announcement date to beginning 2020. The game's funds were three-time more than Wasteland 2. The additional budget was regularly consumed on implementing conversational scenes and hiring voices artists.
